Rosacea is a chronic acne-like skin condition that typically starts with redness on the cheeks, chin, forehead, or nose that can come and go. Occasionally, rosacea can occur on the chest, ears, neck, and scalp.
Over time, the redness becomes more persistent, and visible blood vessels appear. If the condition is not treated, bumps and pimples develop, and the skin can become tender and sensitive to touch. The nose can grow swollen and bumpy from excess tissue (rhinophyma) in severe cases.
Rosacea can be treated with medications such as oral and topical antibiotics that help reduce inflammation and the formation of bumps and pimples. However, it's important to note that these treatments only control the symptoms and do not cure the condition. Laser treatment is the most effective way to reduce visible blood vessels associated with rosacea, which can lead to a reduction in redness and flushing.
